One of the sites I found most interesting in Prague had to be the Old Jewish Cemetery. So much history, so little space.
The oldest tombstone dates back to 1439 and the last person to be buried here was in 1787. There are roughly 12,000 gravestones in the cemetery, but apparently up to 100,000 people were actually buried here. When you see the small space that houses the cemetery, this number is shocking!
For hundreds of years this was the only place in Prague where Jews were allowed to be buried. People were literally placed one on top of the other and there are said to be some 12 layers.
The space is well preserved and actually quite beautiful. This may sound morbid to some, but it is quite the amazing piece of history.
